Based on evidence gathered, the name of Naqsh-e Jahan Square comes from a garden with the same name, which was in the vicinity of the current location of the square.
The garden, which encompassed the current location of the Russian consulate manor, Telefon-Khaneh street and Chehel Sotoun Palace, had a mansion located near the door of the Russian consulate, which was called Naqsh-e Jahan, because of the many drawings and paintings upon it.
Shah Abbas II completely demolished it and made its garden the square’s court.
The gate of the garden was connected to the mansion, and because of that, the surrounding area was called “Darb Kushk” (which literally means the gate of the mansion).
After Shah Abbas I built the four bazaars surrounding it, and the merchants and salesmen settled there, it was called Shah Square.
