The Silver of Sepahan

Silver dishes have a special position for the people of Isfahan; you may find the decorative dishes or the mirror and silver candlesticks in the homes of the brides in traditional families. Silver smithery is one of the most established artefacts of Isfahan. The silversmith first melts the silver and put it into a casket called riche to turn it into a billet.

Then the billet is thinned by a rolling machine and used for silver smithery. In a hammer method, only a hammer is used to make the container in the desired shape. In a bending manner, they pull a sheet of metal on the mold with a bar having a wooden handle so that the shape of the mold is copied and then remove it. In the casting method, they use molds of silver, brass, and aluminum, first filling the molds with wet sand, and putting the other half of the mold on it.

By pushing the mold, the melted silver is poured from the slot into the mold. Then the silver is filed. In the pressing method, using a mold and a pressing machine, the silver is brought to the desired shape. After the container is made, a layer is removed from it- which is referred to as charkhkari- to render the dish shiny. If the dish has an edge, first an edge of it is soldered and then prepared for pruning. After all these steps are taken, you will get a great and valuable product: a handicraft of Isfahan!
