When you look at the Baba Ghassem school’s construction date, that is the year of 1324, it becomes clear that it was built 100 years after the Mongol invasion to Iran. Jafari Mausoleum and Natanz Central Mosque were built around the same year. The historical importance, that make this building no less valuable than other remained historical buildings and constructions, is that it shows that the Iranian nation needed one hundred years to recover from the Mongol invasion.
Hundred years was needed to tame with the magic of culture and art wild Mongol riders, whose language was the language of sword and whose only desire was blood, and to make up for the gross devastation of their attacks. The most famous building of that period is Dome of Soltaniyeh built in Zanjan. In Isfahan there are also many buildings that were built during the Ilkhanid period. For example, winter shabestan, Oljeitu Mihrab (built in 1311), Pir Bakran Mausoleum (built in1314).
In the eastern part of Isfahan there are also many buildings that were constructed in the same period, such as Dashti Mosque, Kaj Mosque, Haftshuyeh Mosque. But let’s come back to the Baba Ghassem school located in Hatef street in Isfahan. This historical school is still breathing and is still alive. Although there are many schools remained from the Safavid period in Isfahan, schools that were built during Seljuk period no longer exist, except Isfahan’s Baba Ghassem school where now theologians are trained.
If you wish to know the importance of this period to the history of Isfahan and Iran, you can read an article called “Era of Babas” written by Allame Jalaluddin Homayi. In this article the personalities of Baba Foulad, that the “Takh-te Foulad” Cemetery is named after him, Baba Delavar, Baba Rokn ed-Din and Baba Ghassem are discussed. These personalities were the noblemen of the Safavid court that had organizational strength, and the proof of it is the school built in the name of Baba Ghassem.
