During the Safavid era special effort and attention was given to medicine and practicing medicine. The matter of practicing medicine had gone beyond the king’s palace and royal families and had become public matter. At that time, there were a few well-known hospitals in Isfahan, where there was a free program for the poor to be examined, get medicine and food.
Among these hospitals was “Gheysarieh Dar Al-Shafa”, which its remnants are now called the “Dar Al-Shafa Mosque”. It was a free hospital for the public and all different patients including the insane and mentally disrupted, were cared for and treated. This hospital had a very discipline budget and duty and especially during the time of the Great King Abbas, it was very organized and well-arranged.

In Nasrabadi’s biography compiled during King Soleiman, this hospital has been mentioned several times.
For instance, in the biography of “Same’e” who was well-known poet, song-writer and musician during the time of King Soleiman, it has been written that: “before he would write any songs, he was stricken by a disease; his friends took him to Varnosfdaran hospital for treatment; but his treatment failed and he passed away”.
