Beheshti`s Heaven

One of the great men that his profession and social relationships, his morals and manners was always more dominant in his life than anything else, was “Seyed Mohammad Beheshti”. He was born on October 24, 1928 in Lonban neighborhood, one of the oldest neighborhoods of Isfahan. More than anything, he ran away from discipleship. He was effective; his effect was his manners, politeness and serenity, and his purity that sometimes amazed those around him.

Dr. Farshad Momeni, one of the economics professors at Tehran Allameh Tabatabaie Univeristy, quotes a story from him that expresses Beheshti’s politeness: “it was early after the revolution. During a time that Mr. Beheshti was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a member of the Revolution Council, and being a young 24-year old at the time, I was the supervisor of the student section of the Islamic Republic party. One day I asked to meet Mr. Beheshti to discuss a matter with him. Early after the revolution, the volume of work and activities was high, but I finally was able to set up a meeting with him at 2 in the afternoon.

In one of the rooms of our building I was preparing the information that I had to discuss with him at 2 o’clock. It was around noon, when the door opened and Mr. Beheshti came in. He asked me to walk with him in the outside area and discuss the matter with him. I gladly accepted; what better to show off to my colleagues that I had walked with him, shoulder by shoulder! He said: “you probably know about the conflicts that has occurred in west of our country.

For this reason, the revolution council has arranged an urgent meeting for reviewing the west’s issues and they really insisted that I attend this meeting as well. It so happened that they held the meeting at 2 o’clock, and I said that I had arranged a meeting before and I didn’t accept to go to the revolution council’s meeting.

Yet my friends insisted that my presence in that meeting would be very effective. Since my 2 o’clock was booked with you, I wanted to ask you, what should I do?”; as young I was, I didn’t know what to say to his politeness and modesty, so I said: “without any doubt, your presence in that meeting would be necessary. Then he gave me his famous planner and asked me to mark a time for a meeting with him; and so I did. Such a great man that never gave up his manners and purity for his position and title”.
