A Silken Church !

In the 17th century, the Armenians of the Jolfa neighborhood had a small church called “Saint Hakoup”. It was the oldest church of the Jolfa neighborhood, did not have any kind of decorations, and very soon it became insubstantial and unable to accommodate all the Armenian Christians for the religious ceremonies.

Khaje Avdik Babakiyan, a wealthy silk merchant lived during the reign of the Shah Abbas I, founded St. Mary Church in 1613, and decorated it with lights, silver and gold chandeliers, and valuable canvases and paintings using his own personal funds during his lifetime. Khaje Avdik was then buried in the church after his death.
