The Sound of “Kouchnak”

The first churches built in the Jolfa neighborhood did not have bells nor bell towers. Therefore, to invite the people to the church to participate in the religious ceremonies, a huge stick called “kouchnak” was hit. The first church that had a bell was St. Thomas church and because of the same reason it was also known as Bell church. Over time in all the churches of Isfahan bell towers were built in an Armenian architectural style.
