Isfahan’s Chaharbagh was the busiest passage of the city up until a few decades ago and not just a place to pass along, but one to stay in and visit friends at.
Every caste of the society had its own place in Chaharbagh. Lovers of arts and culture also had their enlightened gatherings in Chaharbagh. This treed Safavid passage was always open to the citizens for their walks.
The young and the old, the educated and cultured, the scholarly and the well dressed, all walked the distance between Darvazeh Dowlat and Si-o-Se Pol again and again.
It would have been enough for you to witness these walks a few times and become familiar with all the faces.
As if everyone was an acquaintance; Abbas Beheshtian, who was the walking encyclopedia of Isfahan and joyously walked the promenade; Mr. Sepanta, who immortalized his memory in everyone’s mind with the “Lor Girl;” Haj Aqa Sepehri, who with his smiling face and spick-and-span appearance, was the teacher of many generations of Isfahanis; Dr. Lotfollah Honarfar, whom Isfahan was truly indebted to; Mr. Dahesh, who gracefully walked in the middle of Chaharbagh with his white and full hair and an air of dignity, civility and reverence around him. Sambat and Yervand, two of the most famous painters of Isfahan, could also be seen in these walks.
Sometimes humorous discussions and banter of the passersby attracted your attention. All this was a part of the history and culture of Isfahan.
